My Job Is Making Me Depressed But I Can’t Quit

“My job is making me depressed but I can’t quit” – That’s not just a statement. That’s an expression of acute pain. That’s a human being’s plea for help. That’s a situation that needs to be attended immediately.

And, that’s why I am here.

Friend, I have been there where you’re right now. I know how it feels. How painful it could get and how depressed it can make you. Hence, I have prepared a 6 step plan to help you get out of this situation. By the end of this article, you would have learnt how to quit your job.

The 6 step plan to get out of the job that’s making you depressed

What you’re going to read now, might change your life forever, if you act on it.

So, here we go.

Step 1 : Take a Break

Go on a leave for at least 15 days. Try to visit a place that’s beautiful. And do some soul searching there.

You need to find out what’s the main reason of your depression. Of-course it’s your job that’s making you unhappy, nevertheless, you need to find the major reasons. For example:

  • Is it your nagging boss
  • Are you feeling that you job is preventing you to accomplish anything worthwhile in your life
  • Is it the physical stress & mental stress caused by excessive work load
  • Are you’re colleagues bitching about you all the time – In short “office politics”
  • Is your hard work not being recognized
  • You just don’t want to work for anyone. You want to be your own boss

There could be innumerable reasons. I just gave you a few to initiate your thought process. When you will be detached from your work environment, you will be able to think more clearly.

And, once you find out the main reasons, you’ll be able to handle this situation properly.

Step 2 : Start saving money

The main reason you’re unable to quit your job is money. Hence, it’s really the first priority now. You need to save money, because if you don’t save you’ll never be able to quit your job.

Just calculate your monthly expense and try to save at least 3-6 month’s cushion money. So, that you could quit & still have enough time to find a new job or start a new business. Whatever you feel like.

If you’re thinking of finding another job, then 3 month’s cushion will work. However, if you are thinking of starting your own business, then you would need at least 6 month’s cushion money.

Now, you must be thinking how to save money, because nothing remains at the end of the month.

You see, we make a lot of unnecessary expenses. If we curtail down the unnecessary ones, a lot could be saved. Let me give you a few examples:

  • Watching movies in multiplexes
  • Eating in restaurants
  • Pizzas
  • Coke
  • Bear
  • New dresses & shoes
  • Driving a lot
  • Lots of subscriptions like Netflix etc.

Those were just a few examples. If you try a bit harder you’ll find a lot more. And even after doing the above mentioned things, you’re unable to save, I would ask you just one question.

How many times do you eat in a day?

If your answer is 4, then start eating 3 times a day and save money by skipping your fourth meal.

Is that really hard? Then please stop reading the post now, because this site is for people who’re damn serious about their lives. Not for those who just complain and don’t have the guts to take a bold step.

If you’re serious, you can find lots of ways to save money.

Once, you’ve found the ways you must create a term deposit (fixed deposit) each month for a period of 1 year. You don’t need to begin with a huge amount. Just find out what’s the minimum amount your bank is allowing. Do this online, so that you can break it when you need immediate cash.

This will stop you from getting into debts. And, we all know that huge debts will make quitting your job almost impossible.

Step 3 : Find your skill

It doesn’t matter whether you agree with me or not, but the fact is this – You’ve got skills.

Now, it depends on you which skills will you use to earn money.

The first and obvious skill is the job skill for which you’re getting paid right now. Other skills are the ones you’ll have to discover for yourself.

Based on these skills you can do the following things:

  • Offer consultancy
  • Start a blog
  • Start your own business
  • Get a new job

Did you know that people are earning thousands of dollars per month just because they know how to use Microsoft excel? I never thought one’s knowledge of Microsoft excel could be used to make money, yet people like Purna were able to quit their jobs by starting a blog on excel tutorials.

If you’re a good speaker, you can make money by teaching others how to be a good speaker. If you’re an artist, you can make money on Patreon.

In the worst case scenario, if you don’t have any skill, then learn one and start teaching it to others and make money on the way.

You know what my skill is? It’s understanding the pain of others and helping them out. In addition to that I have, at least, 30 different skills that could be used to make huge money, but I decided to choose the one that gave me the maximum pain – My 9-5 job (Which later on became 6-2 , 2-10 & 10-6 job as I was working in shifts).

Yes, my skill is to help people get out of the jobs that make their lives depressing and miserable.

Step 4 : Use your skill to create a side hustle

As I told you earlier, you need to start a business (your hustle) with the skill you have. It could your blog, you consultancy company or any other business.

Don’t think much, just start it. The stars will never align in the perfect way to give your the perfect start. In fact the perfect time is now. If you start it, then proverbially, 50% of the job is done.

Don’t try to learn everything before starting it, because that will never happen. You’ll learn on the way.

When I started a web hosting company, I did not know anything about web hosting. When I started my first blog, I did not know much about blogging. In fact, I didn’t even know that you don’t need to learn HTML to start a blog. In ignorance, I learnt HTML, CSS & javascript to build my first site.

A few months later, I came to know about wordpress (a blogging platform) & since then I have built all my blogs on wordpress. You see, I learnt on the way. Most of the bloggers don’t know about HTML, CSS & Javascript but I know & it has given me an advantage. I later on learnt PHP.

But, do you need to learn all these things to start your blog? Absolute NO. You don’t need. If you can type then you can start a blog. And even if you can’t type, still you can start a blog – Jon Morrow is a living example of that one.

Step 5 : Work on your side hustle each and every day for the next 6 months

If have the money to survive for the next 6 months, you can quit your job right now and start working on your business. However, if you got nothing in savings then you will have to work on your side business for, at least, 6 months to get your salary replaced.

The six month’s time is not a rule written on rock. I have seen people like Nathan earn good enough from their first month itself. That’s the advantage of starting a consultancy business. You can start making money from the first month itself. The same can be done with your business as well. However, in case of blogging it needs at least 6 months. Nevertheless, I still urge you to start a blog, because a blog is bound to make you money if you just stick long enough.

Step 6 : Quit when your business is earning good enough

If you’re thinking to quit your job when your business starts making as much as your salary then I must tell you that you’re gravely mistaken because that’s illogical.

You’re working on your job for 8-12 hours per day. How do you expect your side business to deliver the same financial results with just 2-4 hours of work per day?

Secondly, you don’t need that much money to survive. Chrystie  was able to quit her job, when her blog was making less than 50% of her salary.

Just make a few calculations and you’ll be surprised to know that you actually need to make a lot less money per month to survive.

Don’t wait until you start making huge sums of money from your side business. Quit when you’re making good enough to survive, because after quitting your job, you’ll be able to pay full attention to your business.

In fact, people like Mike Geary were able to double their income, in the first month itself, after quitting their jobs. That happened because they could now work full time on their business.

Conclusion

Money isn’t a reason good enough continue doing things that make you depressed and miserable. I have tried to tell you that there exists a way to get out of a situation that’s killing you from within.

Many people have tried it and are now living a life filled with happiness and satisfaction. Now they have both time and money for pursuing things they love. I wish you all the best for your pursuit.
